Quick thoughts

Monday lunch, yesterday's trip to Brooklyn a sweet memory lingering on my plate. Warm Za'tar bread, lemony Lebanese hummos, freshly made, long lettuce leaves, torn from a romaine heart. Organic romaine hearts form Trader Joes. Guiltily purchased rather than the more expensive but more sustainably grown local lettuce I would prefer. NPR on the radio, talk of GMO seeds, mono-culture and world hunger, a manipulated discussion that missed the real point and problem. I change the station in favor of my simple lunch and a glass of cool water, pondering what is next in my life in food.

Quick thoughts

Sunday night, the kitchen is cooling down from many hours of roasting, boiling and baking. Getting ready for the week. Head swarming with thoughts for this blog, so many of which go unwritten for lack of time; how to navigate the world of deceptive ingredient labels, genetically modified foods, cooking fresh whole foods in this busy era, sweet tooths, food for the privledge, food for everyone, and so many other topics. Hopefully in the coming months I will have the time to post my thoughts, strategies, struggles and successes on many of these subjects. I end the night with the taste of warm home baked bread in my mouth; whole spelt, left to rise over and over through the afternoon, a softer texture than ever before, chewy crust, tender crumb, bread for the week and a kitchen to clean.

walking through east village in the city in search of special salt. arrive at Porchetta to be gifted a tin of emerald sea salt flavored with fennel pollen, fennel seed, rosemary and sage. An enormous gift from a new friend and food lover. Wonderful how a pinch of something so small will bring a smile to many meals yet to come.

quickies

MLK day celebration. breakdancers, poetry slam, crowds, kids, families pooling snacks, a crew sitting in the corner on the floor: popcorn, clementines, crisp pink lady apple, nuts, applesauce, animal crackers, carrots. Happy kids, happy parents, talk of skin color, justice and what is fair.
